Carl was born in 1947 in Clinton, Mass. and developed a love of the sea when he moved to California at the age of 9. The foggy waters of San Francisco Bay and the warm beaches of Southern California always appealed to him and he spent many hours exploring them during the next 8 years.
Carl considered a career in marine biology while in high school, but developed an interest in health care while an undergraduate at St. John's College in Santa Fe. He decided to pursue a career in medicine and eventually became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Carl started sailing while in nursing school in Houston, TX on a 14 foot Finn International and in 1976 purchased a Tanzer 22 while stationed at Madigan Army Medical Center. For four and half years he sailed the waters of Puget Sound, mostly single handing his Tanzer. But when he was reassigned he sold it thinking he would be sent to a distant inland station. Ironically, he was sent to Ft. Ord, Calif but by the time he knew where he was being assigned the boat had been sold.

While at Ft. Ord I became interested in flying and that distracted me for several years. And, all the rest of my military assignments were, in fact, too far from the ocean to allow me to have a sailboat. It wasn't until I visited the San Juan Islands on an Earthwatch expedition in 2003 that my desire to go cruising flared back into life. In 2004 I purchased a Newport 33 pilothouse, dual helm sloop while on assignment at Madigan AMC in Tacoma (this time as a civilian contractor). That summer I sailed it to Ketchikan via the Inside Passage and had it towed the rest of the way to Seward. Then in October I found the cruising liveaboard I'd been searching for. The sale was completed in Jan '05 and I took the schooner to Port Angeles for refitting. She is now on the hard and the refitting is in progress. In March of '06 I'll head down there to launch her and begin a series of shakedown cruises before heading off to Hawaii in June.
